  • Hydro-Québec

We operate some 60 hydroelectric generating station, making us one of the largest hydroelectricity producers in the world. Close to 100% of our electricity is generated using water, Québec hydropower is a generating option with very low greenhouse gas emissions and no toxic waste. This clean energy is delivered to our customers across Québec and our export markets. Hydro-Québec’s transmission system is the most extensive in North America: over 34,000 km of high-voltage lines running from large generating stations in remote areas to the province’s more populated areas. We deliver electricity through our distribution lines, which crisscross the province. Did you know that our transmission and distribution lines extend for some 260,000 km? We also fine-tune technological innovations that set the benchmark for electricity providers worldwide: safe battery materials, energy storage systems, electrical powertrain systems, network maintenance robots and more.

Furthermore, more than 75% of our installed hydroelectric production capacity in Quebec is included in the northern territory, more specifically in Eeyou Istchee James Bay (installed capacity of 17,452 MW) and on the Northern Shore (installed capacity of 12,801 MW). In this sense, the numerous infrastructures in the northern territory (48 operating power plants, 102 transmission stations, 8,722 km of lines, 25 administrative buildings, etc.) require a significant portion of annual purchases.

As part of our Strategy for Economic Reconciliation and Strengthening Relations with First Nations and Inuit, Hydro-Québec is committed to adopting a partnership approach that will allow us to carry out our projects in an affordable and responsible manner jointly with First Nations, Inuit and communities, and facilitate access to appropriate levers that will allow them to be full partners in the energy transition and decarbonization of autonomous networks as well as other facilities not connected to the main network.
